Raspberry Pi Compute Module 1 – Classic Embedded Platform in a Compact Form
Raspberry Pi Compute Module 1 is the very first model in the professional Compute Module series from Raspberry Pi, marking the beginning of a new era in embedded system design. Based on the Broadcom BCM2835 processor—well known from the Raspberry Pi 1 Model B+—Compute Module 1 features a dual-core ARM1176JZF-S processor clocked at 700 MHz, integrated with 512 MB of RAM and, in the standard version, 4 GB of eMMC storage. With its SODIMM-like form factor and compatibility with baseboards, CM1 enables the development of compact and reliable electronic devices for industrial, educational, and prototyping applications.

Well-Thought-Out Variants – For Flexible and Cost-Effective Projects
Compute Module 1 is available in two basic versions: one with 4 GB of built-in eMMC storage, and a Lite version without onboard storage, allowing for the use of external media such as microSD cards via the SPI interface. The Lite variant offers greater cost flexibility and simpler file system updates during software development.
Reliable Functionality on a Basic Architecture
CM1 provides access to all key interfaces familiar from early Raspberry Pi models: GPIO, SPI, I2C, UART, as well as CSI and DSI interfaces for camera and display support. As a result, it still finds use in projects that require basic computing performance along with high reliability and adaptability. The module is ideal for handling simple algorithms, collecting sensor data, managing graphical displays, or controlling peripherals in industrial applications.
Stability and Compactness – For Industry and Education
Thanks to its compact size and very low power consumption, Compute Module 1 has been used in numerous industrial and consumer devices. The integrated eMMC ensures fast system boot-up, and the low heat output makes it suitable even for enclosed, passively cooled housings. CM1 can operate across an extended temperature range, making it well-suited for field projects and outdoor applications.
Typical Use Cases – From Automation to Educational Kits
Over the years, Compute Module 1 has found wide application in automation control systems, educational lab kits, testing devices, and compact IoT solutions. Due to its simplicity and compatibility with earlier Raspberry Pi OS versions, it excels in long-term applications where system stability, low cost, and easy integration are essential. The module supports embedded designs based on the Raspberry Pi platform that require reliable architecture.
Compatibility and Accessories – A Proven Ecosystem
Thanks to its use of a standard SODIMM connector, CM1 can be integrated with many baseboards offered by the manufacturer and third-party companies. A variety of dedicated expansion boards, adapters, enclosures, and development kits are available, enabling easy testing and project deployment. Compute Module 1 also supports many accessories from the Raspberry Pi ecosystem, making it ideal for fast prototyping and system expansion.
Longevity and Support – Proven in Hundreds of Projects
Although Compute Module 1 is no longer among the newest solutions, it remains popular among embedded system developers and OEM device manufacturers. Its long-standing presence on the market and strong community support make it a trusted platform in projects where production continuity, integration simplicity, and minimal hardware requirements are critical.
