The SparkFun I2S Audio Breakout board utilizes the MAX98357A digital-to-analog converter (DAC), which converts I2S audio signals into analog signals to drive speakers. The I2S standard (not to be confused with I2C) enables digital audio signal transmission, which is then amplified by a Class D amplifier capable of delivering up to 3.2W of power into a 4Ω load. The board can be configured to output either the left, right, or both channels.
The SparkFun I2S Audio Breakout is easy to use, requiring only a few pin connections to get started. By default, the board is set to "mono" operation, meaning that the left and right signals are combined to drive a single speaker. If you wish to use separate speakers for the left and right channels, you’ll need to cut the mono jumper. Besides selecting the audio output channel, you can also configure the gain, which can be adjusted from +3dB to +15dB. While channel selection is configured on the board, gain is controlled externally via the gain pin. The default gain is set to +9dB but can be easily changed!
