The SparkFun LTE Stick is a development and prototyping platform for the u-blox LARA-R6 LTE Cat 1 module. The LTE Stick uses the LARA-R6401 version, which supports both data and voice calls for North America and operates on the LTE bands used by AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and FirstNet networks. The board includes a nanoSIM socket, allowing users to choose their preferred network. The LARA-R6 module supports multiple LTE FDD frequency bands (2, 4, 5, 12, 13, 14, 66, and 71) and offers a range of features typical for u-blox modules, including uFOTA (firmware update over the air), Root of Trust, secure boot/update, jamming detection, antenna and SIM card detection.
The LTE Stick exposes UART and I2S interfaces on a 2.54 mm header along with Reset and Power On signals. The board is designed specifically for mounting on a breadboard, making prototyping easier. The board has two SMA connectors for the LARA-R6 module's main and auxiliary antennas. The main antenna transmits and receives data, while the auxiliary antenna only receives data. Power to the board is provided through a USB Type-C connector (recommended) or a VIN PTH pin (max. 6V). Additionally, the board includes test points for advanced users to solder the I2C interface, a second UART interface, and four GPIO pins (IO1, IO2, IO3, and IO6).
