SparkFun Qwiic Directional Pad is an excellent solution for projects that require easy integration of additional buttons. With this device, you can add a 5-way directional pad to your I2C bus, enabling interaction with a microcontroller through button presses (up, down, left, right, and center). The built-in RGB LED provides visual feedback, indicating which button was pressed.
The control panel is equipped with 5 momentary buttons, which are read by the PCA9554 I/O expander (8-bit I2C). When a button is pressed, the microcontroller receives a notification and can respond, for example, by changing the color of the RGB LED, providing additional feedback to the user. The interrupt signal (INT) allows for immediate notification of the microcontroller when the button state changes. Thanks to the Qwiic system, the device is easy to connect without soldering, although there are also 2.54 mm pitch pins available for breadboard mounting.
The device supports a configurable I2C address, allowing you to connect multiple panels in the same project, each with a unique address. This makes it ideal for projects that require more than one control panel, such as menu navigation systems or remote control panels for robots. An Arduino library is available to help with integration into your project.
