This is a new edition - significantly modified and extended - of the manual published by the Scientific and Technical Publishers in 1998.
The book is devoted to modern database technology and creation of database systems. It can be included in the classic textbook positions due to both layout and content. The lecture is conducted with a focus on modeling real organizations. This aspect makes the book attractive and distinguishes it from others - more theoretical.
The author explains the basic features of database systems. Presents data models. He discusses two main elements of modern client database management systems: the interface and the toolkit, as well as the main element of modern server management systems from the server side, i.e. its core. It describes two basic standards: SQL3 and ODMG. He discusses the stages of the design and implementation of database systems, as well as the methods used in them. It explains what database planning and administration is all about. It presents new applications of databases, namely data warehouses, OLAP analytical applications and internet databases.
The book is written very easily, and its substantive value is raised by aptly selected examples, sets of exercises with answers and a glossary of concepts. After reading it, the reader will be pleased to find that many problems in the field of databases are much simpler and easier than previously thought.
