About the book

A practical guide for any constructor who wants to attach mass storage working in the most popular IDE / ATA standard to the digital system. The example of a development kit with an 8-bit microcontroller from the AVR family shows that access to data placed, for example, on a FAT32 partition is not complicated. The book describes functions that enable saving and reading data from various mass storage devices, eg hard disks, CD-ROM readers or CompactFlash memory cards.
The software presented was written using the free WinAVR package with the C language compiler for AVR microcontrollers (AVR-GCC). Thanks to this, transferring the sample software to another hardware platform (eg for PIC microcontrollers or ARM core) should not cause any problems.

  • Construction of a hard disk;
  • Description of the AT-BUS standard;
  • Logical organization of data on disk;
  • Connecting the disk to the microprocessor system;
  • Software support for hard disk;
  • Access to data on the FAT32 partition;
  • A simple file system;
  • Support for CompactFlash memory cards, CD-ROM drives.
