About the book
The ubiquity of digital technology in the life of modern man does not always go hand in hand with its actual knowledge and the ability to use digital systems in practice. Following this trail, the author prepared a compendium of digital technology, in which he presented both historical outline, current state and predicted directions for further development of digital circuits.
The reader will learn from the book what it is and how the logic gate works, as well as: counters, registers, encoders, multiplexers, RAM, ROM, FRAM, MRAM, Flash, EEPROM, SRAM, MRAM, as well as many other elements and functional blocks commonly used in digital technology. The book is complemented by a shortened catalog of the most popular CMOS4000 systems.
The book is intended for students and students of technical faculties, as well as all electronics interested in the basics of digital systems presented from the practical side.
From the introduction to the book
In order for the adventure with digital technology to start smoothly, at the beginning you need to learn a bit of general information, which will allow you to look at the whole "digit" from a distance and in the right proportions to see the related mathematics. Chapter 1 is dedicated to this general view.
Chapter 2 contains information on elementary bricks - gates. You will learn that these elementary bricks can be implemented in a variety of ways in practice.
Chapter 3 is devoted to the discussion of the most important properties and parameters of digital circuits. It is to show that, unfortunately, it is not always possible to omit the internal construction of the digital system and treat it as a black box.
Chapter 4 contains a lot of very important information: by presenting an outline of the history of digital technology, it realizes the importance of historical events today. It also shows practical consequences resulting from the internal structure of integrated circuits.
Chapter 5 contains a lot of useful information about the use of gates. It is only in this chapter you will learn the various goals of the gates used in practice. You will find out how many interesting ways you can use the gates.
Chapter 6 describes flip-flops and registers. Next to the gates, the flip-flops can be considered as the elementary bricks of the digital technique. In this chapter you will find very important information about speed and delays. The lack of knowledge in this area is the most common cause of failures in the construction of digital devices.
Chapter 7 provides an overview of extremely useful, most commonly used integrated circuits that act as generators and time circuits.
Chapter 8 is dedicated to counters. Includes invaluable information on time subtleties. Because the understanding of the function of all terminals and the practical consequences of differences between the various meters of many electronics causes problems, chapter 9 is also dedicated to meters.
Chapter 10 covers other integrated circuits: decoders, multiplexers, demultiplexers, analogue keys, arithmetic circuits, memories and others. The provided messages are enough for the practical use of many interesting systems of this type.
Appendix A contains an overview and practical examples of the use of selected CMOS 4000 systems according to their functions. This is a very useful combination, allowing for a quick selection of the system that will meet the task.
Appendix B is a shortened catalog of integrated circuits of the CMOS 4000 family.
In Appendix C , various types of memory are briefly discussed. This is not a guide for the constructor, but the material presenting the main types of memory and development directions.
