The advantage of the presented stabilizer is good efficiency, so it works perfectly in situations where the output voltage must be much lower than the input voltage. There, a regular linear stabilizer would simply overheat.
Another unusual option is working with 100% filling, i.e. with a compact key in the integrated circuit structure. The switching transistor can be permanently open without a shutdown cycle. Thanks to this, getting a given output voltage, eg 12V, will be possible with 12V power supply (bypassing a small voltage drop, which at the output current of 1A is only 0.3V).
