Category: Shunt resistor

Current shunt resistors for current measurement

Current shunt resistors are used for measuring current by monitoring the small voltage drop generated across an element with a precisely defined resistance. They are particularly suitable for measuring high currents that cannot be conveniently measured directly with a standard meter. Shunts operate with appropriately matched millivoltmeters, ammeters, and measurement circuits and can be used in power supplies, battery systems, power installations, and industrial equipment.

High-current measurement

Current shunt resistors enable high-current measurement by converting the measured current into a proportional, low voltage drop. The main shunt parameters include rated current and the voltage generated across its measurement terminals at rated current, allowing the component to be matched with a suitable meter or measurement circuit.

Operation with millivoltmeters and ammeters

Shunts can operate with millivoltmeters and ammeters designed for an external current-sensing resistor. The measuring device reads the voltage drop across the shunt and uses it to determine the current flowing through the circuit. When selecting components, the rated shunt voltage should match the input range of the measuring instrument.

Current shunt resistor applications

Current shunt resistors are used in measurement circuits, power supplies, battery chargers, battery systems, power installations, and automation equipment. Variants designed for different current ranges allow the shunt parameters to be matched to the monitored circuit.
