The book describes physical phenomena occurring in power systems during short circuits. Methods of their exact analysis using computer calculations as well as simplified analyzes based on simple calculations are presented. Great emphasis was put on the physical interpretation that facilitates understanding of the analyzed phenomena, as well as on the correct mathematical modeling of the system elements necessary for performing accurate and simplified analyzes. The recommendations of international standards regarding the determination of short-circuit quantities and determination of the effects of short-circuits are discussed. Numerous calculation examples related to practical problems regarding the selection of switchgear and power protection settings have been given. The algorithms and numerical methods used in computer programs and examples of computer programs used to perform short circuit calculations are presented. Methods of limiting short-circuit currents were also given and methods and devices for their measurement and registration were discussed. The manual is intended for students of electrical engineering faculties of technical colleges as well as for engineers (designing and operating these systems).
