Electronics in recent years has been dominated by several strong trends that accumulate, giving three basic effects: miniaturization of components, rapid growth of their computing power (of course, digital technology), while at the same time reducing the demand for energy. Now they are joined by another trend: universal wireless communication. Its rapid popularization has become possible not only due to the official "release" and increasing the number of unlicensed ISM bands, but also a rapid reduction in prices of components and transmission modules, as well as easier accessibility and simplification of advanced teletransmission modules (GSM, Bluetooth, DECT or ZigBee), whose capabilities are able to meet even the most sophisticated requirements of the constructors. Not without significance - on the construction side - is the adoption by a majority of major radio modules manufacturers a uniform (or almost homogeneous) list of commands controlling their work (AT +, also called Hayes commands), whose history goes back to 1977, but their effectiveness is undeniable also 30 years later.
For these reasons, we have prepared an EP + edition devoted to M2M applications (Mobile-to-Mobile, Man-to-Machine, etc.), traditionally referred to the problems encountered in construction practice. In addition to the review of solutions available on the market (modules and devices, short and long-range, operating on ISM and GSM bands), we also publish articles about solutions implemented in industry, non-standard radio transceivers (WirelessUSB on page 33), new trends spread in modules GSM (built-in Java interpreter - page 63, sharing the hardware resources of the module to the user - page 38), we devoted some space to show unusual integrated circuits to radio tracks (page 24). I particularly recommend the internships about antennas in low-power SRD devices (page 14) and an article on the ZigBee network technology entering the market (page 54). In order to bring readers opinions on the M2M market of representatives of distribution companies and large manufacturers, we publish 9 short interviews. Beginning with page 107, we publish a list (with examples!) Of standard AT + commands, the operation of which is implemented, among others, in GSM modules.
Limited, though not small (124 pages!) Volume of EP + prevented us from deeply showing all the issues that may be of interest to practitioners. That's why I pay attention to the contents of three CDs included in the EP +: in addition to the basic technical information of integrated circuits and complete modules (catalog and application notices), we have also included presentations and materials from distribution companies operating on the "radio" market and materials for practitioners: free stacks Bluetooth / MiWi, documents related to the increasingly troublesome coexistence of many different radio systems in ISM bands, applicable ISM band rules in Poland, etc. I hope that the diversity of published materials will facilitate systematisation of knowledge about the market, whose dynamic development has surprised even marketable torments such as Nokia or Sony-Ericsson. We will not give it to us!
