Description

Galvanic USB separator based on ADuM3160 and ADuM4070  from Analog Devices.

It provides galvanic separation between USB interfaces (see figure below). The separator is equipped with a DC / DC converter that converts the USB voltage of 5VDC to the same voltage on the "secondary" side. The maximum output power of the inverter is 2.5W.

The device has two USB connectors (see figure above). The USB separator gets its power from the USB interface connected to the microUSB connector. The white LED mounted on the board fulfills the role of DC / DC converter preload, which is recommended by the ADUM4070 system manufacturer - Analog Devices - to ensure stable operation of the converter.

The DC / DC converter was made on a specialized ADuM4070 (Analog Devices) system, which works with the Pulse PH0555NL transformer. The separation of bidirectional D + and D- lines of the USB interface was performed using the ADuM3160 (Analog Devices) system.

The galvanic USB separator is very useful in professional applications. It prevents, among others damage to the computer to which we attach a programmer or hardware debugger, which supports the launch of the digital system. In a situation in which a computer and a running digital system are powered from other phases of the power network (this is often the case in practice) there is a high risk of a potential difference between the masses of devices. In an extreme case, electric shock or high current through the data cables may occur.
