A USB Host stack extension that allows for Ethernet functionality to be added to embedded systems equipped with a USB Host interface. It supports Ethernet-over-USB adapters and integrates with the emNet TCP/IP stack, providing LAN and Internet access without hardware modifications. The solution supports simultaneous operation of multiple adapters, USB hub support, and USB tethering (RNDIS), enabling smartphones to be used as network gateways. Segger emUSB-Host LAN (9.37.10)
emUSB-Host LAN is an extension of the USB Host stack that enables easy addition of Ethernet networking functionality to any embedded system equipped with a USB Host interface. The solution supports a wide range of Ethernet-over-USB adapters, allowing an embedded device to access a local network (LAN) and, via a gateway, the Internet. The module is an add-on to emUSB-Host and enables enumeration and operation of most USB-to-Ethernet adapters available on the market without requiring hardware modifications. This means existing products can be upgraded with network connectivity through a firmware update only.

A system running emUSB-Host LAN can pass the network interface directly to the emNet TCP/IP stack, ensuring full integration with network infrastructure. The solution allows multiple adapters to be connected simultaneously and supports parallel operation of other USB classes. By using a USB hub, it is possible to access the network while simultaneously storing data on a mass storage device (MSD). This helps reduce hardware costs, as there is no need to include a dedicated Ethernet connector in new device designs.
emUSB-Host LAN also supports USB tethering, enabling the use of a smartphone as an Internet gateway. In this scenario, the phone creates a virtual network between itself and the embedded system, providing Internet access or access to IP services running on the embedded device. For example, a printer equipped only with a USB Host port can be made network-accessible without any hardware changes. The end user can connect an Ethernet-over-USB adapter or smartphone and easily configure the device via an integrated web server. The solution features low RAM and ROM memory requirements, making it suitable for resource-constrained systems. emUSB-Host LAN is a flexible and scalable tool for upgrading existing products and designing new devices with networking capabilities.
