About the book

The book contains a collection of basic information about local serial interfaces used most often in modern microprocessor systems. It is intended both for those who are taking their first steps in this field, as well as for those who want to expand their knowledge or perform an application based on systems equipped with one of the described interfaces. The book contains all the information necessary to understand the operation of interfaces, also discusses the data exchange protocols used during data transmission through these interfaces.

There is no answer to the frequently asked question "which interface is the best?". The author focused on practical solutions and presentations of examples of programs written for hardware interfaces embedded in popular microcontrollers as well as executing interface functions exclusively on the program path using universal microcontroller resources.

The issues related to data transmission using serial interfaces such as: I2C, SMBus, SPI, Microwire and 1-Wire are discussed in detail. Many ready-made software and hardware solutions have been described, including specialized controllers and solutions used for galvanic separation of transmitter and receiver circuits. Particularly much space is devoted to I2C and SPI interfaces, as the most widespread among 8- and 16-bit microcontrollers.

About the author

Jacek Bogusz is an experienced designer of electronic devices, a former employee of the Research and Development Center of Radio Broadcasting at the Radio Plant Diora in Dzierżoniów. Currently, he deals in the design of devices equipped with microcontrollers intended for industrial automation systems. Since 1997 he has been cooperating with the monthly Elektronika Praktyczna, in which he has led, among others, courses devoted to the programming of microcontrollers in C language and assembler. He also published many articles devoted to the design of modern electronics.
