This book contains a set of exercises that guide you step by step through building a microprocessor system based on the Nios II e core – starting from the simplest working configuration and ending with designing your own modules.

Each part is additionally enriched with comments explaining key issues related to the discussed topic (e.g., an interface, a problem to be solved). In addition, exercises have been prepared to show how, using the Nios II system, to handle commonly used components such as memory cards or encoders.

The exercises described in the book were performed using the MAXimator board with the FPGA 10M08DAF256C8G chip. A promotional set (MAXimator PROMO) is also available for purchase, which, in addition to the MAXimator board, includes the MAXimator Expander extension and the ZL32PRG programmer.

The book assumes that the reader has basic knowledge of programming in C (or related languages), and even better if this knowledge relates to microcontroller programming. Knowledge of FPGA programming or hardware description languages (particularly VHDL) will be helpful but is not required and can be supplemented during reading the appendix – ultimately it will turn out that FPGAs are not as complicated as some claim.

About the author

Piotr Rzeszut graduated in 2018 in Electronics and Telecommunications from the Faculty of Computer Science, Electronics, and Telecommunications at the AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków, earning a Master of Science in Engineering degree with distinction.
Since 2014, he has been cooperating with the Multilayer Systems and Spin Electronics Group led by Prof. Tomasz Stobiecki, where he conducts research on modern spin electronics systems.
Apart from scientific work, he is involved in teaching and popularizing knowledge in the field of digital electronics, microcontrollers, and programmable systems. Privately, he is a cinema, photography, and film music enthusiast, as well as a passionate aviation fan.
