The Pololu 4140 QTR-MD-01RC-S module uses a 940 nm IR emitter and a phototransistor to measure reflected light from a surface. The RC output allows measurement via a microcontroller’s digital I/O pin – the discharge time depends on the reflectance level. Lighter surfaces result in shorter pulse times, while darker surfaces produce longer discharge times.
The maximum sensing range is 30 mm, with an optimal working distance of approximately 5 mm, enabling stable and repeatable performance in line-following applications. The 2.9–5.5 V supply voltage range ensures compatibility with common 3.3 V and 5 V microcontrollers.
The IR LED current can be dynamically adjusted across 32 dimming levels, allowing adaptation to ambient lighting conditions and reduced power consumption. Maximum current draw at full LED brightness reaches 32 mA.
Compact dimensions and a 4-pin JST SH side-entry connector simplify integration into small mobile platforms and support convenient cable routing parallel to the PCB.
