Many people are still charging 12V acid batteries with uncomplicated rectifiers containing only a transformer and diodes. Simplicity is an advantage, but the charging parameters are usually far from optimal.
The old proven principle says that a typical car battery should be charged with 1/10 of battery capacity. Charging with a lower current will increase the charging time, but there are no negative effects on the battery. The charging with a much higher current is unfavorable and dangerous.
