A USB stack extension that supports USB On-The-Go technology, allowing a device to dynamically act as a host or peripheral. The solution automatically detects the role based on the ID pin state and initializes the appropriate stack, integrating with emUSB-Host and emUSB-Device. The module supports virtually any USB OTG transceiver and enables direct communication between devices without a PC. Low RAM and ROM footprint and included demo code simplify the implementation of dual-role functionality in embedded systems. Segger emUSB OTG Support (9.30.1)
SEGGER emUSB-Host OTG is an extension of the USB stack that enables support for USB On-The-Go (OTG) technology, introducing the concept of a dual-role device. This means that a single device can dynamically operate either as a host or as a peripheral, depending on the connection configuration. The solution preserves the standard USB model, in which the host communicates with peripheral devices, while also enabling automatic role switching. emUSB-Host OTG provides a simple interface for detecting the current role of the USB OTG controller.
The module integrates seamlessly with both emUSB-Host and emUSB-Device, creating a complete environment for implementing OTG functionality in embedded systems. Virtually any USB OTG transceiver is supported, ensuring high design flexibility. Once a valid OTG session is detected, the system checks the ID pin state and automatically initializes the appropriate stack – host or device. This enables direct communication between two USB devices without the need for a traditional host computer.
The package includes a sample demonstration application that starts the OTG stack and waits for a valid session to be established. In Device mode, a simple USB mouse example is used. In Host mode, a sample Mass Storage Device (MSD) application is provided, detecting a connected USB storage medium and displaying its information. Low RAM and ROM consumption makes the solution suitable for systems with limited hardware resources. emUSB-Host OTG enables the design of modern devices capable of communicating directly with each other, such as printers, digital cameras, or industrial equipment. It is a flexible tool for embedded system designers requiring dual-role USB interface support.
