Description

The stereo audio amplifier breakout Adafruit Stereo I2S 3W Amplifier Breakout uses two MAX98357A devices to provide a complete two-channel digital I2S audio path with integrated DACs and Class D amplification. Separate left and right channels allow two speakers to be driven directly without an additional DAC or external amplifier. The module can be used with Raspberry Pi, ESP32, Arduino and other microcontrollers or single-board computers providing an I2S audio output.

With a 5V supply, each channel can deliver up to 3.2W into 4Ω at 10% THD or approximately 1.8W into 8Ω at 10% THD. The Class D amplifier provides efficiency up to approximately 92% with an 8Ω load at 1W output power. The supply voltage range is 2.5–5.5V.

The digital I2S interface supports sample rates from 8kHz to 96kHz and does not require an external MCLK signal. The module supports both 3.3V and 5V logic. BCLK, DIN and LRC signals are provided, while the GAIN input allows amplification to be configured for 3dB, 6dB, 9dB, 12dB or 15dB. The default gain is 9dB.

The speaker outputs use a BTL configuration, so both terminals of each speaker are actively driven and neither terminal should be connected to ground. The output is an approximately 300kHz PWM waveform that is averaged by the speaker coil. The outputs are intended to drive speakers directly rather than feed another amplifier input.

The MAX98357A devices provide thermal and short-circuit protection together with click-and-pop reduction circuitry. The board includes a pre-soldered 4-pin screw terminal for two speakers and solder pads for power and I2S signals.
