Description
CharliePlex LED Matrix Bonnet is a compact lighting module designed for use with Raspberry Pi computers equipped with a 40-pin GPIO header. The board allows control of 128 red LEDs arranged in a 16×8 matrix, creating a bright and visually appealing display ideal for data visualization, animations, or lighting effects. The built-in IS31FL3731 LED driver communicates via the I2C interface, making setup and operation simple — only the SDA and SCL lines are required, which can be shared with other I2C devices. Each LED can be individually controlled with 8-bit brightness adjustment (256 levels), enabling smooth gradients and animation effects. The onboard RAM can store up to eight animation frames, which can be switched with a single command to create fluid and dynamic visual transitions. Using Charlieplexing technology, the module efficiently drives a large number of LEDs while minimizing GPIO pin usage.
