Laser processing of solid materials has been performed in ambient gas. Having the workpiece immersed in liquid, having a liquid film on the debris, on the surface.
Introduced in the 1980s, Neutral liquids assisted laser processing (LALP) has proven to be of great importance in the cutting of heat-sensitive materials, and for the generation of nanoparticles in liquids. The liquids used for organic solvents are cryoliquids.
