The book presents the basics of the construction of digital and microprocessor devices. It contains discussions of selected integrated circuits of small, medium and large scale integration as well as numerous examples of their applications. Some reader's surprise may be aroused by the choice of microprocessors to illustrate some of the issues (these are 8-bit microprocessors Z-80, 8048 and 8051). If, however, a deeper look at contemporary microprocessor systems, it turns out that the basic construction techniques - and this is what the book presents - have been unchanged despite 20 years.

In individual chapters you will find:

  • basic electrical properties of digital circuits and principles of their application;
  • functions of selected digital integrated circuits of small and medium scale integration and various examples of their applications;
  • derivation of selected 8-bit microprocessors (Z-80, 8048, 8051) and principles of the central unit design with their use;
  • permanent memories (ROM, PROM, EPROM, EEPROM) and static (SRAM) as well as principles of creating blocks of memory about a given organization;
  • dynamic memories (DRAMs) and rules for creating blocks of dynamic memory;
  • programmable parallel input-output systems (8255, Z-80 PIO) and their application for controlling the keyboard and display;
  • programmable time-counter systems (8253, Z-80 CTC) and their application for measuring time dependencies;
  • rules for creating complex input-output systems and attaching them to various types of microprocessors.
The book is intended for students of subjects such as computer science, electronics or automation. It can also be used by students of electronic technicians, as well as by anyone interested in the basics of computer hardware construction.
