Kitronik ZIP96 Retro Gamer is a versatile and fully programmable retro-style console designed specifically for the Raspberry Pi Pico. The device provides a complete platform for learning programming through play, featuring 96 fully addressable LEDs arranged in a 12x8 matrix that can serve as a display for games and visual effects. In addition to the display, the console includes a buzzer speaker for sound, a vibration motor for haptic feedback, and 6 control buttons (4 directional and 2 action). This allows users to create their own games and applications that deliver not only visual but also sound and tactile experiences.
The board also provides additional breakout pins: GP1, GP11, ADC1, and ADC2, along with 3.3 V and GND headers in a standard 2.54 mm format, enabling the connection of external components. GP18–GP21 are accessible on the underside of the board, offering flexibility for expanding projects. The Raspberry Pi Pico is mounted to the console using low-profile 20-pin sockets, ensuring a stable connection. Power is supplied by 3 AA batteries, housed in ergonomic holders on the underside of the device. These holders also serve as comfortable grips, making the console easy to hold and use.
A dedicated MicroPython module and example code are available for ZIP96 in Kitronik’s GitHub repository, as well as via PyPI in the Thonny environment. Kitronik has also developed a set of lesson plans to support computer science classes for students in grades 6–10. The device comes fully assembled – simply add the Raspberry Pi Pico, power source, and your own code to start. ZIP96 Retro Gamer is an ideal educational and hobbyist tool, combining programming learning with the excitement of playing games you create yourself.
