For writing the memory of AVR microcontrollers, programmers with the ISP serial interface are most often used. They are cheap and uncomplicated. However, these programmers lost their universality because Atmel introduced new microcontrollers, programmed using PDI and TPI interfaces. The programmer presented in the article is universal, it will be useful both for older and newer AVRs.
Recommendations: a device necessary in the workshop of every electronics dealing with microcontroller devices.
Basic parameters:

  • compatible with the AVRISP programmer mk.II
  • USB interface to the master system
  • power from the USB port of a PC
  • ISP programming connector
  • PDI programming connector (Program & Debug Interface) for ATXmega microcontrollers
  • TPI programming connector for ATtiny microcontrollers
  • reset button (Reset)
  • LEDs indicating power supply and programmer status
  • possibility of powering the programmed system
  • the possibility of programming systems powered by voltage less than 5V
  • the ability to update the programmer firmware with USB

The set includes a printed circuit board, a set of elements and documentation.

The AVT5388 programmer works with ATMEL STUDIO up to version 6.2 (it does not work with version 7.0 or higher). ATMEL STUDIO 6.2 can be downloaded directly from the manufacturer's website: http://www.atmel.com/tools/STUDIOARCHIVE.aspx .
