Expansion board for BBC micro:bit designed for monitoring air quality and environmental parameters and logging measurement data. Measures temperature, pressure, humidity, air quality index and eCO2, with results displayed on a 128 x 64 px OLED screen or stored in 1 Mbit EEPROM memory. Additional features include an RTC, three ZIP LEDs, an integrated BBC micro:bit edge connector and a solar panel input. Kitronik 5674
Air quality monitoring board for BBC micro:bit enables environmental data to be collected indoors and analysed over time. The onboard sensors measure temperature, barometric pressure, humidity, air quality index and eCO2. Results can be displayed directly on the monochrome OLED screen with a resolution of 128 x 64 px and indicated using three programmable ZIP LEDs. The integrated edge connector allows BBC micro:bit to be inserted directly into the board. The RTC real-time clock and 1 Mbit EEPROM memory enable long-term data logging with timestamps. Collected data can be transferred to a computer for further analysis and graphing. Applications include experiments monitoring changes in air quality in classrooms, offices and workshops and comparing environmental conditions over different periods.
BBC micro:bit pins P0, P1 and P2 are broken out to 0.1-inch pitch solder pads for connecting additional inputs and outputs. 3 V and GND pads are also available for powering connected devices. The board can be powered by 3 AA batteries or through the microUSB connector. A regulated 3 V supply powers the BBC micro:bit through the edge connector, eliminating the need for a separate microcontroller power source. The solar panel input supports operation with NiMH rechargeable batteries, allowing long-term experiments to use solar energy. Suitable NiMH rechargeable batteries must be used when using the charging function. Programming can be carried out in Microsoft MakeCode using the dedicated Kitronik Air Quality extension, with JavaScript and Python also supported. The manufacturer provides tutorials covering environmental measurements, OLED display operation, date and time settings, data logging and data transfer.
