The SparkFun AST-CAN485 is a miniature Arduino in the compact Pro Mini housing. In addition to all the typical features of the Arduino mini, it also has a built-in CAN (Control Area Network) and RS485 ports, enabling quick and easy connection to many industrial devices. AST- CAN485 is based on the very popular Arduino platform and is compatible with the Arduino Pro Mini, which gives it a small size, ideal for embedding in many projects. It supports Arduino IDE core libraries and is installed using the Arduino board manager. The manufacturer provides libraries supporting CAN and RS485 ports, facilitating quick start of work with interfaces. Thanks to built-in CAN and RS485 transceivers, the development board allows instant connection with most devices and industrial networks.
The Dev SparkFun AST-CAN485 board is based on the Atmel AT90CAN128 processor. The processor operates at a frequency of 16 MHz, has 128 kB of Flash memory, 4 kB of SRAM memory and a hardware CAN controller. CAN485 has commonly used communication ports and standard functions of pins, including: I2C, SPI, UART, 8 analogue inputs and 6 pins supporting interrupts. In addition, the AST-CAN485 is equipped with a controller that allows to supply an unregulated input voltage to the VIN pin to obtain an acceptable input voltage range of 7 ... 16 V. However, it should be remembered that the maximum recommended voltage given on the VIN pin is in the range 7 ... 12 V.
CAN and RS485 are the backbone of many communication protocols with applications in automation, industrial systems, building management, automotive systems, OBDII and many others.
