About the book

Almost all electronic systems require a DC power supply. The problem of proper power supply is often treated too lightly by the constructors, and yet the properties of the power supply can have a significant impact on the operation of the supplied system or device. If the supply voltage fluctuates, many systems will work erratically or will not work at all. If the current efficiency of the power source is too low, then it may be unpredictable for the power system to be suffering from a "current craving". When the power supply "hummles" (ie there are pins, transients or other anomalies at its output terminals), the system may react in a strange and unintended way. Digital circuits are particularly sensitive to the noise of power supplies. For example, when there is pin interference, computers may stop running, hang, or act in an unintentional manner.

The DC power supply is an important part of the electronic device, but it is often given too little (or not at all) attention in electronics textbooks. This resulted in the creation of this book. The reader will find in it material regarding the nature of electrical power, a description of functional blocks of power supplies, and a discussion of the systems and components from which power supplies for electronic devices are constructed.

The book is intended for electronics technicians and students of electronic technicians, but advanced electronics hobbyists and radio amateurs may also use it.
