A miniature lidar distance sensor that detects objects up to 10 cm away, regardless of color, transparency, or lighting. It generates a digital signal (0 V on detection), operates in the 3-5.5 V range, draws only 30 mA, and supports sleep mode via the ENABLE pin. Ideal for robotics, automation, and contactless interfaces, it offers a fast response time (142 Hz), switching hysteresis, and a compact housing with an indicator LED. Pololu 5552
The miniature proximity sensor based on lidar technology enables object detection at distances of up to 10 cm. It generates a digital output signal that switches to a low state (0 V) when an object is within its field of view. Otherwise, the output remains in a high state (equal to the supply voltage). Thanks to the use of lidar technology, the sensor's operation is unaffected by the object's color, transparency, or ambient lighting conditions.
The sensor precisely measures the return time of emitted laser light pulses (940 nm), making it significantly more accurate than traditional reflective sensors. No direct contact with the object is required, which increases the durability and reliability of the entire system. The minimum detection range is less than 1 mm, enabling accurate detection of even very close obstacles. Thanks to the built-in hysteresis at the detection range limit, state switching occurs smoothly without signal chatter.

The sensor operates in a voltage range of 3 to 5.5 V, allowing easy integration with popular microcontroller platforms. Typical current consumption is 30 mA during operation and only 0.4 mA in sleep mode. The ENABLE pin allows the sensor to be switched to a low-power mode. The device has holes for a 2.54 mm pitch connector, which facilitates quick prototyping. Additionally, the board includes an LED indicator that lights up when an object is detected, providing visual confirmation of operation.
The sensor can be used as an alternative to photoelectric sensors, light barriers, or classic touchless buttons. It is well-suited for mobile robotics as an obstacle detector or a component of a touchless user interface. It can also serve as a counter or presence sensor in home and industrial automation. Its small size allows installation in hard-to-reach places. With a wide operating temperature range and reliable construction, the sensor is suitable for both prototypes and final products. The high refresh rate (142 Hz) ensures fast response to environmental changes.
