WM8960 stereo codec module with driver for 1W class D speakers and headphones. It uses the I2S interface and the I2C bus to configure the system. SparkFun BOB-21772
WM8960 stereo codec module with driver for 1W class D speakers and headphones. It functions as a stereo audio ADC and DAC and communicates using the standard I2S audio data protocol. It has a number of features built in, some of which include advanced digital signal processing for automatic level control (ALC) for line or mic input, programmable amplifier (PGA), noise suppression, and configurable I2S settings and analog audio path over I2C.
There are 6 analog input pins on the board for internal routing of different types of source signals to the ADC inputs. This allows it to handle audio from a computer sound card, smartphone headphone output, electret microphones, MEM microphones, etc. The efficient class-D driver also means low heat dissipation and long battery life when driving 8 ohm speakers with up to 1 watt per channel for portable audio applications . As an alternative output, users can also use the audio codec to power 16Ω headphones with up to 40mW of power for portable audio applications. The chip has a built-in 3D function to artificially increase the separation between the left and right channels. A dedicated Arduino library allows you to easily control all audio codec functions, from simple volume control to 3D audio playback.
The board has WM8960 pins led out along the edge of the PCB on a connector with a pitch of 2.54 mm. Using the Qwiic system avoids manually connecting the I2C port when configuring the audio codec settings. The Power (PWR) LED indicates when 3.3V power is applied to the audio codec. To power the analog (AVDD) and speaker driver (SPKVDD), power must be applied to the VIN pin. The built-in XC6222 3.3V/700mA voltage stabilizer regulates the voltage in the analog circuit, and the jumpers for the analog circuit (e.g. AVDD-ISO) and speaker drivers (VIN/SPKVDD) allow you to power each power supply separately.
The module is perfect for projects that require encoding or decoding of audio signals. Full documentation and usage examples are available on the product page.
