Description of the Raspberry Pi Zero 2 minicomputer

Refreshed version of the smallest computer from the Raspberry Pi series. Zero 2 W is equipped with SiC BCM2710A1 with four ARM Cortex-A53 cores (the same as in Raspberry Pi 3) clocked at 1 GHz and 512 MB of RAM memory. Communication is provided by interfaces such as: USB, WiFi, Bluetooth, CSI (with which you can connect the camera) and miniHDMI, which is used to connect the screen.

If you didn't think the Raspberry Pi Zero could be even better, then we have a nice surprise for you! The new Raspberry Pi Zero 2 offers all the benefits of the Pi Zero W, but with one big difference - more cores!

More specifically, this giant upgrade involves a CPU change to the SIP unit in the Raspberry Pi Zero 2, which now has 4 cores - just like the Pi 3! There is also Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) on board in the newer version 4.2, making the Pi a great IoT solution (BLE support is still working, in terms of software).

We also have a base kit, a budget kit, and a starter kit with all the necessary compatible components to keep your Zero 2 microcomputer running smoothly.

At first glance, the Pi Zero 2 looks like the Raspberry Pi Zero v1.3 we know and love. But when we started to think about the added convenience of not having to worry about WiFi or an Ethernet cable - and what a well-matched set of accessories can add - we realized this charm. And then we saw the price ... is that true? Yes!

The entire Raspberry Pi Zero family is the thinnest and most economical Raspberry Pi currently released. It's a bit like the Pi 3's little cousin - only with a mini HDMI port, two micro USB ports (one for power, one for USB) and 512MB of RAM. All this is supported by a 1 GHz quad-core processor, similar to the Pi 3A + and 3B +.

Best of all, the Pi Zero 2 retains the same shape, connectors and mounting holes as the Pi Zero v1.3 and Pi Zero W. 99% of the cases and accessories will still be fully compatible with both Pi Zero W and Pi Zero W. v1.3 - although if you have a case with a metal top, there may be some problems with WiFi connectivity.

Note - despite the built-in Wi-Fi, the Pi Zero 2 is a very stripped down raspberry and requires a few accessories to turn it into a computer! As a minimum, we recommend:

  • Good quality 5V power supply - We recommend a 5V 2A power supply with a cable, or a 5V 1A power supply and USB Micro B cable - this will allow you to power the Zero 2 from the mains adapter. It is not recommended to power the Zero 2 from a computer's USB port as the voltage drops frequently and can damage the SD card!
  • Operating system microSD card - At this link you can find a ready-to-use Raspbian card that has the correct firmware for Zero 2, or you can use a blank microSD card and install the software on it according to the instructions: https://mikrokontroler.pl/2020/04 / 02 / raspberry-pi-imager-preparation-sd-card-for-raspberry-never-it was-so-easy /
  • Mini HDMI to HDMI Adapter - will allow you to convert the small port on the Zero 2 to the standard HDMI jack, which will allow you to get 1080P HDMI video + audio from that little computer!
  • USB OTG cable - Allows you to connect a regular USB device such as a USB hub, keyboard, mouse etc. to the Zero 2.
  • USB - UART converter - if you do not intend to connect an HDMI monitor, use this adapter to connect the cables to the GPIO pins and log in via the serial console. This is the easiest and fastest way to get to your Pi
  • 2x20 pin header - solder it to connect Pi HATs, GPIO cables, etc., just like to a normal Pi. (We also have 2x20 female and 2x20 female angle slats for more exotic connection.) If you do not feel well in the art of soldering, we offer a version with soldered GPIO connectors here.

To keep the price and size as small as possible, there is room for a 2x20 pin strip on the Zero 2. They are not attached or soldered. Creative people can easily solder a set of 2x20 male strips, so you can connect any type of Pi HAT or other plug-in cap. A female 2x20 header and connecting the Pi Zero 2 directly to the KAmodRPI Cobbler or Cobbler will also work as a good link.

We strongly recommend other parts and components to help you use your Pi Zero:

Original case for Raspberry Pi Zero 2 - Classic, durable plastic case of the Raspberry Pi foundation. It keeps your Pi Zero 2 safe and elegant.
USB Powered Hub - You can connect any USB devices without overloading the Zero power supply. (You can also ironically power the Zero from the hub itself by plugging the micro USB cable into the hub)
Mini wireless keyboard with trackpad - only requires one USB port, making it a perfect match for Pi Zero
Wireless Keyboard + Mouse - Also requires only one USB port, but for everyday use.
Pi Cobbler or T-Cobbler - When paired with a male or female 2x20 pin connector, you can use your Zero with a breadboard to connect sensors, LEDs, motors, and more!
Ethernet hub and USB hub - You can never have enough USB ports. Add more possibilities to your Raspberry Pi Zero 2 if you are a wired connection enthusiast!
