FTDI systems have moved serial communication from RS ports to USB, while Digi modules release communication from cables and transfer it to radio waves.
The offer of Digi in the field of wireless communication modules is constantly expanding, OEM modules are available, freeing the designer from the necessity of tedious design of the radio part and application of the selected communication protocol, which significantly shortens the project development time, Xbee, ZigBee and the latest Wi-Fi give a choice of implementation wireless transmission. Depending on the module version, communication is possible from a few meters to several kilometers. Xbee and Zigbee modules, in addition to point-to-point communication, enable the construction of a complex multi-point radio network together with the entire communication infrastructure, such as routers, coordinators, etc. All radio modules have identical lead layouts, which definitely facilitates the expansion or change of the communication standard without re-designing devices.
