PVDF piezoelectric sensor that generates high voltages due to the deformation of the piezoelectric film, making it ideal for vibration and impact measurements. With its flexible design and adjustable resonance frequency, the sensor can be used in a variety of applications, such as contact detection, accelerometer or vibration sensor. SparkFun SEN-09197
The PVDF piezoelectric sensor from Measurement Specialties is a flexible component composed of a 28 µm thick PVDF piezoelectric element, coated with silver paint electrodes (Ag), and mounted on a 0.125 mm thick polyester substrate. The sensor features two clamp connectors, making it easy to integrate with other systems. The sensor generates high voltages as a result of deformation of the piezoelectric film, which occurs when it is displaced from its neutral axis. This enables its use in vibration and shock measurements, as well as functioning as a flexible switch.
The sensor works by creating very high stress in the piezoelectric polymer, which results in voltage generation. When the assembly is deformed through direct contact, the device acts as a flexible "switch", and the generated voltage is sufficient to directly trigger MOSFET or CMOS circuits. Additionally, when the element is supported at its contacts and left to vibrate "in free space", it works as an accelerometer or vibration sensor. The mass or length of the element can be adjusted by fixing it in place, allowing the resonant frequency and sensitivity of the sensor to be tailored to specific applications. Multiple-axis response can also be achieved by properly positioning the mass away from the center.
Thanks to the mass mounted at the end, the sensor is highly sensitive to low frequencies. This makes it an ideal solution for applications requiring accurate vibration, shock measurements, and contact detection. The version with mass further enhances detection precision, and adjusting the resonant frequency allows for fine-tuning the sensor to meet demanding applications.
