A simple and practical soil moisture sensor designed to work with the BBC micro:bit. Using conductive probes inserted into the ground, the module measures moisture levels and generates an analog signal read by the micro:bit. Powered by 3V, it ensures easy and reliable integration, and when combined with the Mi:Power board, it can also trigger an audible alarm when the soil is dry. Kitronik 5647
Kitronik Prong Soil Moisture Sensor is a practical soil moisture sensor designed specifically to work with the BBC micro:bit board. The module allows you to monitor the amount of water in the soil, making it perfect for projects related to plants, gardening, and education. The sensor’s two conductive probes are placed directly in the soil, and the presence of moisture generates an analog signal that can be read by the micro:bit. The sensor is powered by 3V supplied by the micro:bit, ensuring simple and reliable integration. With compatibility with the Mi:Power board, you can create a compact, standalone set capable of not only measuring moisture but also triggering an audible alarm when the soil dries out.
Mounting the sensor is extremely simple – the micro:bit can be screwed to the board using the included screws and nuts, or connected with crocodile clips. This makes the module an ideal solution for both beginners and more advanced makers. The sensor can be programmed using any micro:bit-compatible environment, such as Microsoft MakeCode, giving users broad opportunities to create interactive projects. It is worth noting that, to extend the electrode’s lifespan, measurements should be taken periodically rather than continuously.
The sensor works great in educational projects, teaching children and young people the basics of electronics, programming, and environmental awareness. It can be used for automating plant watering, building smart garden systems, or simple experiments monitoring soil moisture.
