A reflective sensor that precisely measures the intensity of light reflected from a surface using an IR LED and a phototransistor. It offers a long detection range—optimally around 20 mm, and up to 80 mm—thanks to the QTRXL sensor with a built-in lens and adjustable LED brightness. It generates a digital RC signal that's easily read by microcontrollers like Arduino or Raspberry Pi. Pololu 4540
QTRXL-MD-01RC-S is a reflectance sensor from Pololu based on a module featuring an infrared LED (IR LED) and a phototransistor, enabling precise measurement of light intensity reflected from nearby surfaces. Utilizing the QTRXL sensor with built-in lenses and a high-brightness emitter, this sensor provides exceptionally high sensitivity and an extended detection range. The device operates within a voltage range of 2.9 V to 5.5 V, and its LED can be controlled independently from the supply voltage, allowing dynamic brightness adjustment. The sensor outputs a digital RC signal, easily readable by controllers such as Arduino or Raspberry Pi.

The optimal detection range is around 20 mm, but objects with a high reflectivity factor can be detected from distances up to 80 mm. This makes the sensor an excellent choice for mobile robotics applications such as line-following robots, obstacle detection systems, or projects utilizing light reflection measurements to identify surface color and texture. Its compact PCB size allows installation in small constructions, while the side-mounted JST SH 4-pin connector ensures quick and secure connections.
The sensor is designed for easy integration with various electronic systems and is compatible with JST SH 4-pin cables, including SparkFun Qwiic and Adafruit STEMMA QT solutions (though it does not use the I²C interface). With a low current consumption of up to 32 mA at full LED brightness, the module can be powered directly from standard microcontroller outputs.
