This soil moisture sensor uses a resistive measurement between two gold-plated probes. Corrosion resistance ensures long life and stable measurements. It works with the micro:bit and Arduino platforms, allowing for reading soil moisture levels as an analog signal. Adafruit 6362
Simple Soil Moisture Sensor is a simple, inexpensive, and extremely easy-to-use soil moisture sensor designed for educational and hobby applications. The device uses a resistive measurement method based on the conductivity between two gold-plated probes. The gold coating significantly reduces the risk of corrosion, ensuring longer lifespan and stable readings. If residue builds up on the probes, it can easily be cleaned off with a soft sponge.
The sensor is perfect for learning the basics of electronics, programming, and automation in projects using micro:bit, Arduino, and other development boards with analog inputs. It is not compatible with Raspberry Pi since that platform lacks analog inputs – in such cases, a capacitive sensor is recommended instead. Thanks to its simple design and ease of use, this sensor is ideal for school experiments, workshops, and home irrigation control systems.
Connecting the sensor is straightforward. For the micro:bit, simply use alligator clip leads to connect the appropriate pins: GND, 3V, and OUT to an analog input. On Arduino, you can use either 3V/5V power pins and any analog input (e.g., A0) to easily read soil moisture levels in the range of approximately 0 to 1023. When the soil is dry, readings are below 100, and as the moisture increases, values can rise above 600. No soldering is required – the sensor is ready to use immediately after connection. It’s an excellent tool for learning about automatic watering systems, gardening, and the basics of analog sensors.
