FeatherWing expansion module adding USB Host functionality to Feather boards via a USB-A connector, based on the MAX3421E controller with SPI communication and an integrated 5V 1A boost converter for powering USB devices. Adafruit 5858
Adafruit 5858 USB Host FeatherWing is designed to expand Feather mainboards with the ability to operate USB devices in host mode, such as keyboards, mice, mass storage devices and HID peripherals. The module is based on the proven MAX3421E USB Host controller, which communicates with the main microcontroller via the SPI interface and an IRQ interrupt line.
The USB-A connector allows direct connection of USB peripherals. Data transfer is limited by the SPI bus bandwidth, which is sufficient for HID applications and mass storage device access. The module supports the TinyUSB and USB Host Library libraries and is intended for Feather boards based on RP2040, ESP32-S2, ESP32-S3, nRF52840, SAMD21 and SAMD51 microcontrollers.

The board integrates a step-up converter providing a 5V supply with up to 1A current for connected USB devices, protected by a 500mA resettable fuse. A dedicated enable pin allows software-controlled power cycling of the USB-A port, enabling reset of connected devices without physical intervention.
