Makerbase MKS TMC2160-OC stepper motor driver designed to control a single bipolar stepper motor in 3D printers, CNC machines and automation systems. Based on the TMC2160 IC, it supports a supply voltage of 9 V to 40 V DC and eight peak output current settings ranging from 2.30 A to 4.33 A. Features optocoupler-isolated STEP/DIR control inputs, DIP switches for configuring microstepping up to 1/64 step, and StealthChop and SpreadCycle operating modes. Makerbase MKS TMC2160-OC
The MKS TMC2160-OC stepper motor driver from Makerbase is designed to control a single bipolar stepper motor in 3D printers, CNC machines and automation systems. The module uses the Trinamic TMC2160 IC and supports a motor supply voltage of 9 V to 40 V DC, according to the manufacturer's wiring diagram. The output current can be configured to eight settings ranging from 2.30 A to 4.33 A (peak values). The driver uses EN, STEP/CLK and DIR signals to enable the motor, generate steps and change the direction of rotation. The control inputs feature optocoupler isolation, electrically isolating the host controller signals from the driver circuitry.
The MKS TMC2160-OC features DIP switches for configuring operating parameters without programming the IC. Switches M0 and M1 select microstep resolutions of 1/8, 1/16, 1/32 or 1/64 step, while M2, M3 and M4 set the peak current to 2.30 A, 2.57 A, 2.84 A, 3.11 A, 3.38 A, 3.65 A, 3.92 A or 4.33 A. Switch M5 selects the motor control mode: StealthChop for quieter operation or SpreadCycle for current regulation during movement. Switch M6 sets the holding current IHOLD to either the operating current IRUN or half its value. During configuration, the current setting must be matched to the motor specifications, and adequate driver cooling must be provided.

The module features separate power supply terminals, motor winding outputs and control inputs. Terminals A+, A-, B+ and B- connect to the two-phase stepper motor, while the power supply terminals are marked + and -. Signals from the motherboard must be connected to the EN, CLK, DIR and GND inputs according to the manufacturer's wiring diagram. The design allows the driver to operate as an external motor control module connected to a motion controller through pulse control signals. The MKS TMC2160-OC is suitable for axis movement mechanisms, positioning systems and drives requiring adjustable current and microstep configuration. Before operation, the power supply polarity, motor winding connections and DIP switch settings must be checked.
