Description

The device MQ138 from Soldered is an air quality sensor breakout for detecting volatile organic compounds such as benzene, toluene, acetone and formaldehyde. Its semiconductor sensing element changes resistance when exposed to gases in the surrounding air. These readings can be used to monitor changes in air pollution levels and develop systems that respond to increasing concentrations.

The onboard ATtiny404 microcontroller reads the sensor signal and provides data over I2C. Two Qwiic connectors, compatible with easyC and STEMMA QT, allow the module to connect to a compatible controller board and additional devices on the same bus without soldering. The default I2C address is 0x30, and onboard switches allow it to be changed within the 0x30–0x37 range.

The manufacturer provides an Arduino library with reading and calibration examples. Gas concentration is estimated in software using the response characteristics of the selected gas. Since the sensor responds to multiple substances, readings are approximate and cannot independently determine the concentration of individual components in a mixture. According to the setup instructions, the sensor should be preheated for approximately 48 hours and then calibrated in clean air.
