A miniature lidar proximity sensor that detects objects up to 10 cm away, regardless of color, transparency, or lighting. It generates a digital signal (0 V on detection), operates in the 3-5.5 V range, draws only 30 mA, and supports sleep mode via the ENABLE pin. Ideal for robotics, automation, and contactless interfaces, it offers a fast response time (142 Hz), switching hysteresis, and a compact housing with an indicator LED. Pololu 5462
This miniature proximity sensor uses lidar technology to detect objects at distances of up to 10 cm. It provides a digital output signal that goes low (0 V) when an object is detected within its sensing range, and remains high (equal to the supply voltage) otherwise. Thanks to the use of lidar technology, the sensor’s performance is independent of object color, transparency, or ambient lighting conditions.
The sensor accurately measures the time-of-flight of emitted infrared laser pulses (940 nm), making it significantly more precise than traditional reflective sensors. The non-contact detection increases durability and reliability. With a minimum detection range of less than 1 mm, the sensor can identify very close obstacles. A built-in hysteresis at the edge of the detection range ensures smooth, bounce-free switching.

The sensor operates with a supply voltage range of 3.0 V to 5.5 V, making it compatible with common microcontroller platforms. It typically draws 30 mA during operation and only 0.4 mA in sleep mode. An ENABLE pin allows for low-power mode control. The board features a side-mounted 3-pin JST SH connector, compatible with standard JST SH cables for easy prototyping. A built-in red LED indicator lights up when an object is detected, providing visual feedback.
This sensor is a great alternative to photo interrupters, IR beam barriers, or traditional touchless switches. It’s perfect for mobile robotics as an obstacle detector or touchless user interface element. It can also be used in automation systems as a presence detector or event counter. Its small form factor allows for installation in tight spaces, while its robust design and wide operating temperature range make it suitable for both prototyping and final products. The high refresh rate (142 Hz) ensures quick responsiveness to environmental changes.
