Makerbase MKS AS5047P magnetic encoder module for contactless measurement of motor shaft angular position. Features a 14-bit AS5047P sensor with a resolution of 16,384 positions per revolution and SPI and ABI (ABZ) interfaces. Designed for closed-loop motor control systems, including projects using ODrive, SimpleFOC and compatible MKS XDRIVE controllers. Makerbase AS5047P
The MKS AS5047P magnetic encoder module from Makerbase is designed for contactless measurement of motor shaft angular position over a 360° range. The board features a 14-bit AS5047P magnetic sensor, providing 16,384 distinguishable positions per revolution, corresponding to an angular resolution of approximately 0.022°. The encoder is suitable for closed-loop control of BLDC, PMSM and stepper motors, including systems using Field-Oriented Control (FOC). It can work with appropriately configured ODrive controllers, SimpleFOC-based systems and compatible Makerbase MKS XDRIVE controllers, provided that their interfaces and electrical specifications are compatible.
Position measurement is performed by detecting changes in the magnetic field generated by a diametrically magnetized magnet attached to the rotating motor shaft. Contactless measurement technology eliminates the need for a mechanical connection between the sensor and shaft, allowing the motor position and direction of rotation to be monitored. The AS5047P sensor uses Dynamic Angle Error Compensation (DAEC) to reduce dynamic measurement errors caused by signal processing delays. The sensor manufacturer specifies operation at rotational speeds of up to 28,000 rpm. Proper installation requires accurate alignment of the magnet axis with the sensor and an appropriate distance between the components.
The module provides an SPI interface and incremental ABI (ABZ) outputs for connection to various motor controllers and microcontrollers. The SPI interface enables 14-bit absolute angular position readings and configuration of selected device parameters. The ABI interface generates quadrature A and B signals and an index pulse I, used to determine rotational displacement and speed. The AS5047P IC also supports configurable UVW commutation signals and a PWM output. Signal connections are available through a dual-row 16-pin connector, which also provides power supply, ground, and CSn, CLK, MOSI and MISO signals.

The MKS AS5047P-TS_EK_AB V1.0 board supports 3.3 V or 5 V DC power supply, depending on the selected voltage configuration on the board. For SPI communication, the manufacturer illustrates a connection using a 3.3 V supply, while the ABI connection example for ODrive includes the possibility of using 3.3 V or 5 V. Before connecting the module, the supply configuration, controller logic levels and connector pinout must be verified. The module does not directly control motor windings and requires an external motor controller.
The PCB is designed for mounting near the motor shaft using four mounting holes. The AS5047P sensor is positioned in the central area of the board to facilitate alignment with the magnet. Applications include robotics, automation, CNC drives, positioning mechanisms and servo control systems. Projects using ODrive, SimpleFOC or MKS XDRIVE require selection of the appropriate communication interface and configuration of encoder feedback in the motor controller software.
