Powered by 5 V DC, the module features 6-pin and 3-pin connectors and a PCB measuring 31.2 x 31.2 mm. Designed for positioning systems, robotics and closed-loop motor control applications. The kit includes two 30 cm connection cables and a 6 x 2.5 mm magnet. Makerbase MKS AS5600 V2.0
The MKS AS5600 V2.0 magnetic encoder module from Makerbase is designed for contactless measurement of motor shaft angular position and other rotating components. The board features a 12-bit AS5600 magnetic sensor, providing 4096 distinguishable positions over a full 360° revolution. The angular resolution is approximately 0.088°. The encoder is suitable for robotics, automation, positioning mechanisms and BLDC motor control systems using position feedback, including projects based on the SimpleFOC library.
Position measurement is performed by detecting changes in the magnetic field generated by a diametrically magnetized magnet mounted on the rotation axis. The AS5600 sensor measures the absolute angular position within a single revolution without requiring a mechanical connection to the shaft. Contactless sensing enables angular displacement and rotation direction to be monitored without friction-based measuring components. The included 6 x 2.5 mm magnet allows the measuring system to be assembled. During installation, the magnet must be aligned concentrically with the sensor, with an appropriate distance maintained between the components.
The module provides a digital I2C interface and an OUT output operating in analog or PWM mode. The I²C interface enables 12-bit angular position readings and access to the AS5600 configuration registers. The sensor's default I²C address is 0x36. The OUT output provides position information as an analog voltage or a pulse-width modulated signal, depending on the sensor configuration. The IC also supports programming the start and end positions of the measurement range and changing the direction in which the measured angle increases.
The MKS AS5600 V2.0 operates with a 5 V DC power supply and features two signal connectors. The 6-pin connector provides DIR, SCL, SDA, PGO, 5V and GND connections, while the 3-pin connector provides OUT, 5V and GND. The DIR input determines the direction in which the measured angle value increases, while the PGO pin is used for the IC's programming functions. Pin labels are printed directly on the PCB to facilitate correct connection to a controller. Before operation, the I²C logic voltage levels must be checked for compatibility with the connected device.
The encoder PCB measures 31.2 x 31.2 mm and features four corner mounting holes with a diameter of 4 mm, along with elongated mounting slots that facilitate positioning the sensor relative to the motor axis. The horizontal spacing between the corner mounting holes is 22 mm, according to the manufacturer's dimensional drawing. The AS5600 sensor is positioned in the centre of the PCB, allowing alignment with a magnet mounted on the shaft. The module provides position feedback to an external controller but does not directly control motor windings. The kit also includes a 30 cm 3-pin cable and a 30 cm 6-pin cable for signal connections.
