An extension that allows you to connect classic 3.5" and 5.25" floppy drives to Feather boards, allowing you to read and write data using the original interface. A built-in logic level converter ensures safe operation with 5V devices, and compatibility with the Feather M4 and RP2040 ensures adequate performance when streaming data. Adafruit 5679
Floppy FeatherWing with a 34-pin IDC connector is a unique expansion board that allows you to connect classic 3.5" and 5.25" floppy disk drives to Feather boards. It lets you recreate the atmosphere of vintage computers and once again work with data measured in kilobytes instead of gigabytes. The module provides full read/write support using the original floppy drive interface, and the built-in level shifter enables safe operation of drives requiring 5 V with microcontrollers running at 3.3 V.
Due to the high-speed data streaming required by floppy drives, the module is intended exclusively for use with high-performance microcontrollers such as Feather M4 and Feather RP2040, which offer sufficient processing speed and large amounts of SRAM. Floppy FeatherWing is ideal for data archiving – it can function as a greaseweazle or fluxengine device, sending raw track data to a computer for analysis and conversion. The module also supports direct reading and writing of FAT-formatted diskettes using Arduino, CircuitPython, or a computer connected through the Feather.
Retro electronics enthusiasts can also use it to build musical projects based on the characteristic sounds produced by floppy drives. The board includes an additional write-protect switch to prevent accidental data overwriting. Proper operation requires soldering the pin headers, connecting a compatible Feather board, using a drive with a 34-pin IDC connector, and providing an external power supply capable of delivering up to 2 A. It is an excellent tool for fans of classic technology and creative DIY makers.
