The Makerbase MKS SERVO57D CAN MB stepper motor controller is designed to control two-phase NEMA 23 stepper motors in closed-loop systems. The controller features a 32-bit N32L406 microcontroller with an ARM Cortex-M4 core, a Field-Oriented Control (FOC) algorithm and a 14-bit magnetic encoder. The encoder measures the actual motor shaft position, allowing the controller to detect deviations from the target position and correct motor operation. Closed-loop control reduces the risk of missed steps and enables motion control in robotics, CNC machines, 3D printers and positioning mechanisms.

The MKS SERVO57D CAN MB operates with a supply voltage of 12 V to 24 V DC and supports adjustable motor current from 0 A to 5.2 A. The power stage uses AP30H80Q MOSFET transistors. The FOC algorithm provides torque, speed and position regulation based on encoder feedback. The torque control loop operates at an update frequency of 20 kHz, while the speed and position control loops operate at 10 kHz. According to the manufacturer, the maximum rotational speed exceeds 3000 rpm. The controller supports configurable microstepping from 1 to 256, with a default setting of 1/16 step, as well as relative and absolute position control and adjustable acceleration and deceleration profiles.
Communication with the host controller is provided through a CAN interface supporting data rates of 125 kb/s, 250 kb/s, 500 kb/s and 1 Mb/s. The controller supports up to 2047 slave addresses, a broadcast address and group control, enabling the development of multi-axis motion control systems. The CAN interface uses a TJA1051T transceiver and CAN-H and CAN-L signal lines. The module also provides STP, DIR and EN control inputs, IN1 and IN2 inputs for limit switches, and OUT1 and OUT2 outputs for drive status indication. An integrated display and three buttons labeled Next, Enter and Menu allow parameter configuration, calibration and motor diagnostics. The controller also supports stall detection and restoration of factory settings.

The MKS SERVO57D CAN MB controller board measures 52 x 52 mm and is designed for installation on the rear of a NEMA 23 stepper motor. A four-position screw terminal connects the motor windings to the A+, A-, B+ and B- terminals, while the side terminals provide access to the power supply, CAN bus and additional signals. The included aluminum housing and silicone thermal pad assist with heat dissipation from the electronics. The kit also contains a 6 x 2.5 mm radial magnet, an MKS APT signal adapter and a 100 cm XH2.54 6-pin cable, with wires stripped and tinned over a length of 5 mm at one end. M3 and M2 screws and an Allen wrench are provided for installation. The kit does not include a stepper motor. Before operation, the magnet must be correctly aligned with the encoder, and the motor winding connections, power supply polarity and CAN bus configuration must be checked.
