Description

RPLIDAR S2L is a compact 2D lidar based on DTOF (Direct Time-of-Flight) technology, designed for environment mapping and navigation in robotic applications operating both indoors and outdoors. The design ensures stable distance resolution across the entire operating range, while the IP65-rated enclosure enables use in industrial environments exposed to dust and occasional moisture.

                           Measuring Range vs. Reflectivity (0.05 - 18m)

The measurement range directly depends on the reflectivity of the detected object, which is a critical factor when designing navigation and safety systems. For surfaces with high reflectivity of 90%, the maximum detection distance ranges from 0.05 to 18 m, corresponding to bright walls, structural elements, or obstacles with a high reflection coefficient.

For objects with 10% reflectivity, such as dark plastics, rubber tires, or matte surfaces, the effective operating range is 0.05 to 8 m. This dependency allows precise estimation of the system’s real-world detection capability in the target environment, especially in industrial, warehouse, or commercial spaces where materials and colors vary significantly. The minimum measurement distance of 0.05 m reduces the near-field blind zone, improving obstacle detection accuracy during wall-following, narrow passage navigation, and docking operations.

                                                                                                                       DTOF Method – Time-of-Flight Measurement

DTOF Method

The DTOF method measures distance based on the time of flight of a laser pulse, ensuring consistent distance resolution regardless of whether the obstacle is located nearby or at a greater distance. This measurement principle supports reliable detection of objects with varying optical properties, including dark surfaces, highly reflective materials, and even transparent elements, improving the reliability of mapping data in mixed environments.

High Sampling Density and Angular Resolution

A sampling rate of 32,000 measurements per second increases data density during each scan cycle and enables more accurate reconstruction of the surrounding geometry. With a maximum range of 18 m and a distance resolution of 13 mm, the system captures fine details both in the near field and at medium operating distances, maintaining measurement consistency across the entire working range.

An angular resolution of 0.12° allows precise representation of edges, corners, narrow obstacles, and small objects within the sensor’s field of view. A scan rate of 10 Hz ensures a stable, cyclical data stream, enabling continuous map updates while the mobile platform is in motion. The combination of high sampling frequency, constant distance resolution resulting from DTOF technology, and ±30 mm accuracy supports localization and mapping algorithms, improving environmental reconstruction repeatability and the effectiveness of both static and dynamic object detection in real time.

                                                                                                                  Compact Design – Integration Compatibility

Compact Design – Integration Compatibility

The compact design, with an optical scanning area height of only 18 mm, enables seamless integration with mobile platforms, service robots, and AGV systems without requiring significant mechanical modifications. The device dimensions align with common design requirements for navigation modules used in commercial and industrial robotics, where limited mounting space and low sensor profile are key selection criteria.

The optimized housing shape facilitates installation in standard structural recesses, sensor modules, and under protective covers, while maintaining full 360° scanning coverage. The low-profile construction helps preserve proper center of gravity and dynamic stability during movement. The IP65-rated enclosure additionally protects the optical mechanism from dust and splashing water, supporting deployment in industrial and semi-outdoor environments where compact size must be combined with enhanced operational durability.

RPLIDAR S2L combines DTOF technology, a high sampling rate of 32,000 measurements per second, and a compact IP65-rated enclosure, providing stable and precise 2D scanning in applications requiring extended detection range up to 18 m.
