The Waveshare 28761 uses TOF (time of flight) technology for non-contact distance measurement in the 0.02 - 7.8 m range. The module features an embedded microcontroller and integrated ranging algorithm, enabling direct distance data output without the need for complex calculations on the host system. Typical measurement accuracy reaches ±4 cm across the working range.

The sensor operates at a wavelength of 940 nm and features a very narrow field of view of 2° - 3°, improving resistance to ambient light interference and enabling precise measurements in both indoor and outdoor environments. Ambient light tolerance reaches up to 100 000 lx. The module supports UART communication at 3.3 V TTL logic level or I2C bus with cascading capability for up to 8 devices. An additional I/O mode is available, though distance parameters are not provided in this mode.
The sensor can be used in general distance measurement systems, mobile robotics for obstacle avoidance and path planning, ceiling detection, stacking detection, and various industrial automation applications.
