This module allows you to add MIDI input and output to your Feather board, utilizing DIN-5 connectors and a built-in 3V optocoupler for secure 3.3V communication. The module also features LEDs to indicate data transmission and optional 3.5mm TRS MIDI sockets for the TRS MIDI A standard. It communicates via a hardware UART set to 31250 baud, allowing for easy integration with Adafruit 4740 MIDI instruments and controllers.
MIDI FeatherWing Kit is a module that transforms any Feather board into a fully functional musical interface by adding MIDI input and output support. The module features DIN-5 MIDI IN and MIDI OUT connectors, as well as a 3V opto-isolator, which ensures safe MIDI communication with microcontrollers powered by and operating at 3.3V logic levels. Additionally, LEDs located beneath the connectors indicate data transmission — one for sending and one for receiving. The FeatherWing also provides optional footprints for mounting 3.5 mm TRS MIDI ports (MIDI TRS Type A), allowing easy integration with modern music equipment.
Communication is handled via the hardware UART lines (RX/TX), configured to 31250 baud in accordance with the MIDI standard. As a result, MIDI OUT is controlled by the TX pin, and MIDI IN is routed to the RX pin. The module works with all Feather boards that include native USB support. It is not compatible with boards that use the hardware UART for programming — this applies to the Feather ESP8266 Huzzah, Feather 328p, and Feather nRF52. The kit is supplied as a semi-assembled set — the PCB comes with all SMD components pre-soldered, and the user only needs to solder the pin headers and the two DIN-5 connectors. This makes it an ideal module for musical projects, DIY synthesizers, and integrating Feather boards with MIDI instruments and controllers.
